Look what the cat dragged in: is the world ready for a more feline James Bond?
More than shifting his gender or sexual orientation, surely the boldest way to reinvent Bond would be to make him care for something other than himself. A cat, perhaps? After looking back over 70 years of books and films, I’m convinced the idea has legs (four of them).
Queer re-view: Octopussy
It’s not just the zeros that are double in Octopussy, a film queerly obsessed with doppelgängers. We see double when it comes to Fabergé eggs, identical knife-throwers, uncanny clowns and female cult members who share more than a passing resemblance. And let’s not forget Double-0 Seven himself of course. But it’s the titular character’s lesbian utopia that steals the show.
Of all the fantastical elements of the James Bond franchise, it’s our amorous agent’s consequence-free sex life that strains credulity the most. The creators of the next 007 instalment would be wise to reflect modern day reality in at least one regard: we need to see him enjoying sex safely and responsibly.
